The addition and renovation to The Young House, an elderly housing complex owned by the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford and operated by MB Management. of Braintree, MA, is an example of a success story that can be attributed to close coordination between the design team, owners and contractors. The project received the “Community of Quality Award for Elderly Property” by New England Assisted Housing Management Association. This project was completed while the building was fully occupied. Built in 1915, the original brick building was a four-story, elderly housing complex. The project included the construction of a new steel frame addition to the existing courtyard, construction of a handicapped ramp, a new handicapped accessible toilet, kitchen, office, community room for the 44 residents, and the remodeling of the associated spaces adjacent to the new addition.
